Mock meat tastes like meat in the same way that meat flavoured crisps (chips) taste like meat. It's more about the texture- I've never found a meat "substitute" (quorn/tvp/mock chicken etc) that recreates the texture of meat accurately. You're not missing anything though so trying all the different substitutes that are available won't make any difference. It's just a totally different thing. I'm a qualified chef and I don't think it's possible to "fake" meat, there are several things that constitute meat- muscle/collagen/fat etc and the meat flavour, although similar because obviously it's from the same animal, is different in the same piece of meat depending on how that mouthful is made up, and I've never come across a veggie alternative that has the same composition. I've been veggie since I was 12, which was 18 years ago, and I think veggie meat substitutes are obviously a far more pleasurable experience than a lump of murdered flesh, but also that meat is something in itself, and you will never be able to mimic meat with any kind of accuracy. If anything, the closest I've found has been a Portobello mushroom because that has the same variety of texture and flavour that a hunk of meat has.

No, and I don't believe there ever will be. I actually think there are methods that could make something like soybeans more hearty and satisfying, such as the extended fermentation used in making miso or soy sauce. Soy sauce does taste remarkably similar to the fish sauce that seems to be common in Asia.
About the only thing that gives me the same amount of satiety that meat does is multi-bean chili with a few shots of liquid smoke. Doesn't taste like meat - but very satisfying. A tofu, lettuce, and tomato sandwich is a remarkably delicious substitute for the classic BLT (fry tofu in pan, assemble sandwich, enjoy). I also really enjoy a vegetarian version of Beef Wellington in a cookbook from the bargain bin at Borders - the recipe referenced below sounds good as well.
I have never enjoyed mock meat. Neither the taste nor the texture are the same. Not to mention the fact that it is usually at least twice as expensive at the store (although similarly priced in restaurants).

Ok so people will say YES the ones that are made to LOOK like meat taste like it! But in all truth, they don't. Honestly, how can you make soy beans taste lyk an animal? the answer is you can't, no matter how hard they try to make it look like the real thing. To be honest I'm not a fan of mock meat and even if it did taste like the real thing, what vegetarian would be WANTING their food to taste like meat? I mean no offence to anyone but ewww. That's a really good question though :)

My spouse accidently offered some pretend lamb meatballs as quickly as. it fairly is extraordinarily plenty popular in this catagory that i'm no longer a vegetarian, yet those lamb-balls have been exceptionally tasty. It became into the feel that gave away their veggie origins, no longer the flavor. It became right into a chinese language product, offered from an chinese language grocery (I stay in Seattle; throw a stick in any course, you will hit a chinese language grocery). Sorry i do no longer remember the style. From the feel of the product, i made up my ideas it would be produced from mushrooms, no longer soy.

Seitan taste meat-like. A lot of the fake hot dogs taste authentic. For fake bacon that even tastes like fat - Morningstar Breakfast strips. Morningstar also has a ground beef like item - texturized vegetable protein.

Some things do taste a lot like meat but then some are just really bad. The good ones I like are the Deli Ham slices by Yves. And I love the buffalo wings chicken nuggets by morningstar. Smart bacon by lifelight is good too. I think most products by morningstar iare really good and tastes the most like real meat.

Meat by itself doesn't have much taste, It's the spices and preparation methods that give it it's taste. seitan (wheat gluten) is the closest in texture, but most soy products are close in taste. If you have ever bitten your tongue that's the taste of meat. If you bit your tongue while eating a veggie burger that's the taste of meat dead on. Been their done that once unfortunately.

You can look up all kinds of "burger" recipes online, plus, there's usually vegetarian burgers and hot dogs at grocery stores.
I think chickpeas taste like chicken, and I use those to replace chicken in chicken salad.
Beans can replace meat in lots of things, like stew and chili!

I agree some of these things are somewhat close.
A lot of the taste in meat comes from the animal's fat, blood, and salt. The meat substitutes can give you texture, oils, spices and salt~~ But not the blood. Pretty gross when you think about it. The taste of blood is why people love meat. Gravy is nothing but cooked animal fat and blood. Rare steak is obviously a taste for blood.

Things like hot dogs & schnitzel tastes so much like meat, I sometimes wonder if it really is.But mostly, I would have to say no. Real meat has a very distinctive taste & texture. It is not pleasent at all.

my GF has had me try her "fo meat" things she eats, none of them are a substitute for the real thing. there is no veggie pattie that will ever taste like a real fresh (never frozen) beef burger, fresh off the grill.
I will admit that some veggie things come close to meat products that have been frozen, but there is no comparison to fresh meat!
people who beleave there is a substitute have either never had fresh animal flesh to chew on, or they are lying to you and themselfs
