I am a vegetarian. I eat no meat of any kind. However my mother seems to think that vegetarians eat fish. If it has a face I refuse to eat it.
She is no angry with me because I will not eat the fish she's prepared.
Tell me this... Do real vegetarians eat fish?
I think that the ones that do are NOT vegetarians. They're merely wannabes.

'Real' vegetarians do not eat fish. What is fish if it is not meat? You're absolutely right to say those that do are wannabes. It's like saying "I'm a vegetarian but I eat sausages".

Could I suggest though that you prepare some of your own meals. It might be quite tough for her to cook for you and whoever else there is in your family. Your mother is possibly concerned about your welfare and doesn't understand that you don't need meat protein. Perhaps you could explain that most of the world's population doesn't eat meat.

Fish are animals. They are 'alive' and have systems like any other blooded animal. I guess someone could be really smart and say plants have systems too but in science (unless I REALLY wasn’t paying attention back in my school days) fish aren’t classified as plants. They get their food by eating it; not soaking up the nutrients or taking in the light. They also give birth (ugh omg Im squirming I am!) and not 'spawn' like a plant would. There's also the matter of blood like animals and bones as well. Scientifically and logically fish are animals; not plants, and thus eating them is eating a form of meat. You should know that some fish like dolphin (not fish actually) are smarter than a 7 y/o child, and many countries are protecting many species of sea creatures. Why? Have you seen the whales & dolphin massacre in Japan? Do you think only Japanese financially supporting fishing industries?

Some people are smart enough to not consume any type of sentient beings fish, egg neither any food derived from animals. Few stricter vegetarians not even partake in the enslavement, imprisoning and captivating any form of lives. Some even condemning use of sentient beings in amusement. Vegetarianism never stops at eating habit alone. It all depend on for what reason you voluntarily sacrificing your sensual desire and controlling your own senses, rather than dominating other species for senseless reason. What is vegetarianism? What is “non-violence”? What is “love, mercy & compassion”? What is “pain & suffering”? Why should the poor and defenseless beings fear and protect themselves from fulfilling the meaning of life of human species?

In you case, your parents are not absolutely wrong. Even my own vegetarian friend would thumb me down for spelling error whenever I intended to tell any truth.

Crustaceans and fish are categorized under animalia, not plantae (they're animals, not plants). Therefore fish is not vegetarian.

However, I don't think they're necessarily wannabes. They're just misinformed people, or people who find it easier to say "I'm a vegetarian." rather than "I'm a pescatarian." Most people on the street know what vegetarianism is, but have never heard of pescatarianism. Another reason for this misconception is the idea that crustaceans do not feel pain, therefore it is ok to eat them. While it MAY be true that they don't feel pain (crusteceans capacity for pain is still being debated among scientists) , getting fish out of the sea wreaks havoc on marine life. A huge net coming out of nowhere traps other helpless life, destroys parts of colonies of algae and reefs.

Fish isn't usually classed as meat for some reason but real vegetarians don't eat it. Vegetarians basically don't eat anything that's been living, with feelings and hearts <3

Pescetarians eat no meat, but fish. Please make sure your mum knows this! I hate it when people think veggies eat fish! And some say they can eat chicken??!!

Anyway, your right so good luck and keep it up!

No there is not a vegetarian in the world who eats fish. They do not exist anywhere in any form or fashion with any sort of names or labels. Anyone who does eat fish is called an OMNIVORE or a meat eater or a picky eater any terms referring to meat eating and vegetarianism being one in the same are false terms invented by people who do not understand vegetarianism and are just trying to seem cool without giving up meat eating. For those wondering a pescetarian is a fish who is vegetarian it has no relationship to human beings and cannot be applied to human beings as it is a term used for fish who do not eat meat.

I am a Vegan and I eat fish. I also eat Poultry and Meat...Let me explain.

The meat that I eat comes from animals who eat vegetables so I an still eating their vegetables so I am not being contradictory.

I also eat birds because they are not meat. If you eat when they are in the yolk or a week after they died then you are not really consuming any thing which will violate our ways.

I tried to explain this to other vegans but they called me an idiot and a hypocrite. I went to a conference and pulled out a burger and then this girl started crying and they kicked me out. There are many of us Vegans who eat Meat, Fish, and Poultry. We just do not have a name for ourselves yet...

No. Vegetarians do not eat fish. By definition, a vegetarian is a person who does not consume animals.

Your mother is confused and seems to be thinking of pescetarians.

Edit: Fish most definitely do have blood. If you've ever seen one caught and clubbed (or otherwise killed), you would know that.

There are enough fake vegetarians out there, really pescetarians, who call themselves vegetarians that a lot of people think vegetarians eat fish. Also, it might be because it's not a land animal, or they distance themselves from fish because they're not as cute.

No, one who eats fish IS NOT considered vegetarian, but pescatarian rather. That means they don't eat any animals except fish

Vegetarians don't eat animal flesh, why would they be able to eat a poor dead fish?

And it's not that they're wannabes, but more that they're just not vegetarians.

Vegetarians rule! :]

Fish is meat. So-called fish-eating vegetarian are being dishonest with themselves and others, either wilfully or through ignorance. Stand by your principles and politely decline the slaughter on your plate.

Some vegetarians eat fish, it is the red meat that they don't like

Some also eat eggs and milk.

Vegans will touch neither

It all depends on YOUR reason for being a vegetarian.
