I am starting to work out again and I need to find a new high protein intake. I have previously eaten tuna on a daily bases, I found it to be a great protein intake but I had mercury poising from it. Can any one point me toward a better type of fish to eat lots of every day?

A little known fact: Selenium binds to mercury so that the mercury is not bio-available to people. Selenium actually acts as an anti-nutrient for mercury.

The good news is that fish tends to be very high in Selenium. As long as the Selenium level in the fish is higher than mercury, you are pretty safe. There are a few fishes with mercury levels higher than Selenium, but they tend to be higher on the food chain (sharks and whales).

Unfortunately, this mostly consists of farmed fish, which I'm sure, you posting the the vegetarian/vegan section, you're probably against.

But fresh river trout or bass are pretty safe as far as mercury goes, and decent in protein. I don't think any sort of meat can be classified as low protein, so there's that. But these types of fish aren't cheap, unless you go out and catch it yourself. And hey, if you're not against fishing, and are decent at it, that might be a perfectly viable option.

Yeah, tuna is one of the fishes with the highest mercury content.

Considering how hard it is to get cheap fish that isn't contaminated, and they isn't farmed, your best bet may be just to use eggs for protein.

In addition to what another poster already said, mackerel is also a "cheap" and plentiful..

One tip is to look at restaurant and food guide trends.. Usually any type of fish (or food) that is the current fad in restaurants and food guides become expensive almost overnight. Plus the restos get the first pick so the lesser quality goes to " ordinary" consumers. Canned tuna packed in water or olive oil is actually good enough and cheap. Just look out for the brands that specifically state they don't net dolphins too.

Mercury poisoning is always a risk in fish caught near industrial coastal areas. I run a small commercial tuna fishing business and so far, we have never had any mercury contamination problems. The tuna is also line caught off known commercial fishing/shipping lanes

Almost all fish is protein packed, but prices are all over the place.

- Tilapia is super cheap and nutritious. You can buy packs of them fresh or frozen.

- Other cheap alternatives are cod and catfish.

- Halibut is a super thick/meaty fish that's delicious, but like salmon, will cost a pretty penny.

- If you aren't picky I recommend sardines and anchovies. They are protein packed little monsters but when they are blended with salt, pepper, vinegar, garlic, olive oil, parmesan cheese, lemon juice and Worcestershire sauce it makes an incredible Caesar dressing for salads, sandwich spreads, and marinade! I use it on everything.

- Tuna is always my favorite choice for a cheap protein, but sorry to hear that you got Mercury poisoning. Maybe I should look out!

Good luck doll!

Inexpensive is tilapia- it's a mild, white fish. It doesn't hold up as well as cod or haddock- so if you're grilling it, you need to be careful with it. We use tilapia all the time. The cheapest fish is swai. It's only been popular for the past year or two. You can find it frozen at walmart. It's less than $3-4 a pound. It's an asian catfish, but not as fishy as regular catfish.

it actual relies upon on why you're going vegan. in case you're a ethical vegan then you likely belive that taking eggs and milk from sentient beings that can not grant you their milk or eggs is incorrect. Additionaly, we are the sole animals on the earth that drink the milk of a distinctive species. Any animal that has sensation should not be killed. Fish experience discomfort, dairy cows are compelled to be pregnant until they now no longer lactate then they're killed, male toddler chickens are thrown stay into dumpsters because of the fact they're considered as unproductive on the grounds that they do no longer produce eggs (and confident this happends to unfastened selection besides). the coolest stuff in fish could properly be found it different ingredients besides. Do an internet seek for the action picture Earthlings. this could desire to help you're making your superb selection. there is likewise an astonishing podcast referred to as veganfreak radio. it truly is have been given some super suggestion. good success, i myself wish you go vegan.

One of the reasons I quit eating fish is because of all of the stupid people using the oceans as dumping grounds and the poor fish eating the pollutants. (Once, when we on our annual Lake Erie trip I was walking on the town's pier. One one end was a big oil puddle. On the other end, were families fishing. That disgusted me.) There is also all of the overfishing of the wild fish which disrupts the environment and ecosystem as well...

(If you didn't want a lecture on fish, you should not have posted it in the Vegetarian and Vegan section.)

For protein, try things like veggie burgers, soy/tofu, quiona, seitan, beans...

It is in the wrong category.Oh well.I suppose it really depends on where you buy your fish.Mercury's hard to avoid in fish. So,I'd suggest you eat it only a few times a week. Some fish you could eat once everyday, like salmon (Alaskan wild caught).See this website below for whatever fish you like to eat that's safe around where you live.:)
