Question:
Jello/Jam/Jelly Gelatin?
2009-03-25 17:40:51 UTC
Which Jellos, jellies and jams contain the type of gelatin made out of ground bones?
I'm a vegetarian and I'd really like to know because I don't want to stop eating ALL gelatin products, but I want to stay on the safe side.
Thanks!

All gelatin is made of things vegetarians can't have, even so-called Kosher gelatin. The gelling agents we can have are usually carageenan or agar-agar, but gelatin itself is a big no-no. There are vegetarian "jellos" you can buy. Look in your local health food store or mail-order them from here:

Jams and jellies should be all right for you, though. They're normally made with pectin, which is okay.

Jelly and jams are made with pectin not gelatin. Jello is made of gelatin.

Acorn powder and Konyaku are two other types of popular things used to make jelly or Jello-like foods.

It's not vegetarian. Remember that vegetarians don't eat flesh or flesh by-products. If the product comes from a dead animal (that is, the animal HAD to die to make it), it's not vegetarian. Vegans don't eat products that come from an animal, living or dead. The main difference between "regular" gelatin and "Kosher" gelatin is the source. Kosher gelatin is usually fish. Regular gelatin is mammal.

read the ingredients.

Your best bet for jellies, jams, and jellos is to make your own. For jello, use "kanten" (sometimes called "agar agar") available in Asian supermarkets (cheap) or in natural food markets (pricey). If you get the bars, grind it up in a coffee grinder to get flakes - easier to use. Kanten is relatively easy to use - it sets up quite quickly.
