20% of India are non-Hindus. The Muslims, Christians and large part of Sikh and Buddhists are non-veg. 80% are Hindus, where 30% are veg but have milk and milk products, rest 50% from the Hindus have non-veg - eggs, chicken, mutton (goat meat), fish and seafood too. Some Hindus also have beef although the stats is not known.

The low caste people today, were native people of India or the first settlers who use to have any kind of meat available and it was after the Indo-Aryans brought Hinduism and agriculture that the cow was regarded special. But now some hindus have started to have beef. Yes, beef is cheaper than chicken.

Fish is popular among the coastal states. Not popular in North India.

India is big and diverse you cannot fit all the people in 1 category. For e.g. many Hindus in states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu have beef and upper caste Hindus in Bengal and Assam have fish.

There are about 1.2 BILLION Indians from India. Do you really think they ALL follow the exact same diet?

Vegetarianism is common in India. Those Indians who are vegetarians by definition do NOT eat chicken or seafood, since vegetarianism means not eating ANIMALS, not just COWS. The most common type of vegetarianism in India is lacto-vegetarianism, where people do eat dairy and don't eat eggs.

But like I said, it's not like all 1.2 billion Indians all have the same diet. Or even the same religion, since you for some reason link this diet all Indians are supposed to follow with hindu beliefs. You must be overlooking all the muslims, buddhists, christians, jews, sikhs, jainists, zoroastrians, members of the bahá'í faith etc. who are ALSO Indians from India.

A large percentage of the population is vegetarian- does not eat chicken, seafood, and many not eggs. However, most do eat dairy products. The main reason for vegetarianism is the Hindu principle of ahimsa or non-violence which extends even to animals.

I don't believe meat eating really has anything to do with caste, I believe there are vegetarians and non-vegetarians in all castes. Some people who live in coastal areas eat fish most likely because it is inexpensive, easily accessible, and part of some coastal traditions.

Yes, they are big fans of milk, paneer (cheese) and ghee. Many Indian vegetarians regard eggs as being non-vegetarian. 40% of the population is vegetarian, so the other 60% (720 million) do eat meat. Pork is not common because Muslims don't eat it. Chicken, lamb and seafood are eaten. But they don't eat nearly as much as Westerners do.

I thought it was the middle castes that don't eat meat. The lower will eat pretty much anything, and the upper are trying to imitate the west.

Indians eat fish. I have a friend whose family is from kerela, and seafood is big there. Hindus do eat meat. Some don't, some do. It depends on who you ask. They're swicky about killing, but not the eating. I haven't asked any of my Hindu friends why they eat meat if they believe in reincarnation (I think it makes me sound judgemental).

Eggs are considered non veg. Any food containing eggs doesn't get the veg seal. Dairy is considered veg (hence why cows are revered...they're the second mom).

Indians aren't mainly veg. But if you ask my college friends, that's the impression we give. Me and her high school friend are both veg. Haha.

Yes, they do. Vegetarianism in India is mostly tied up with religion. And even some of the religious Hindus eat meat. And, yes, for the most part they are ovo lacto vegetarians, meaning they do eat dairy products and eggs....just no meat.

Buddha did not teach vegetarianism. He was not a vegetarian. He taught his followers not to kill anything, but not to refuse meat when offered.

Quality kind of people don't eat the worst kind of food (i.e.meat,Non Veg etc)

...people living around sea shore areas (south India ) eat sea food ...

..Muslims eat meat/poultry because of their adopted religious law ..

..In Hindus & Jain it is not recommended to eat meat unnecessary ..

but some of Hindus are eating just for chaning western modern culture...

In Hindus ..lower caste can survive on Vegetarian food as well (easily cheap in India ) ...but they eat ..due to lack of mind...that's why they are considered ..fool & lower caste category ..even they are illiterate.....

Higher class standard eat ,,,milk ,butter ,cheese and their products... (India is a higher producer of milk products ....not so expensive..)

30% of the Indian population is vegetarian and these are mostly upper castes

All lower castes eat meat

Beef and Pork is eaten by untouchable lowest castes

There is a caste-rank-degradation order = Eggs to Fish to Chicken to Meat to Pork to Beef

All Indians drink milk

--

Meat and fish is always more expensive than cereals and vegetables

Upper castes are expected to have more self-control and good karmic acts and thats why meat is banned

Lower castes have to follow less rules, and they can drink, and eat meat and do bad karmic acts
