Question:
Is there any difference between sunflower oils?

My sister recently got a bit upset because her "special" sunflower oil got mixed with the normal sunflower oil and we've been using it like normal oil for frying, when she bought it for her boyfriend who is a vegan.

I looked at the bottle and to me it looks just like a standard bottle of sunflower cooking oil that you buy in a supermarket. Looking on the side the ingredients seem the same - just sunflower oil.

The only difference I can see is the massive £3.99 price tag on the bottle (and the fact it was bought from a special shop dealing in vegan foods.

Is this shop just really taking the mick at £3.99 a bottle or is there really something special and different about this oil in comparison to standard sunflower oil?

Does that 'special' oil say 'organic' on the label? If so, perhaps your sister is gullible enough to pay exorbitant prices for overpriced, overrated products.

While not every sunflower oil is created exactly equal (I once got an extremely cheap bottle that turned out to have a higher level of trans fats) I would say your sister is more than a bit gullible to pay that much for regular sunflower oil just because it comes from a shop for vegans.

Gullible or not, I DO see why she would be upset. If I bought a 4 pound bottle of 'special' oil - regardless of whether it's actually worth the price - I would also be a bit upset to find half of it gone because someone had been frying fish fingers.

I would say it is a total rip off for the gullible.

If you have makers names do a search for them and see if they make any claims, but any brand of Sunflower oil should be vegan friendly anyway

All chemically/thermally refined oils are unhealthy, regardless of the type, and the worst types of "fats" that you can put into you body, hydrogenated or not. Only properly-used, authentic cold-pressed/raw virgin oils are healthy.
