Question:
Should I trust a manager who told me that the McDonald's Peach Pie is vegan?

I went to McDonald's and got my usual salad with only fresh vegetables, no crackers or croutons and no dressing. I bring my own vegan dressing. The manager asked if I wanted to add their new peach pie to my order and I said I couldn't because I am vegan. The manager said she was vegan also (I was totally shocked and I think it is the first time I ever met a vegan who works at McDonald's). The manager said the peach pie has no dairy and no eggs and as far as she knows, none of the ingredients are animal derived. She went and got the case that the pies come in from the walk-in cooler and we looked over the ingredients and I didn't see anything. I googled some of the ingredients and everything checked out okay. Here is the kicker, when I went to our animal rights meeting, a fellow activist told me that peach pies are not vegan and that a real vegan doesn't eat at McDonalds. I asked her to tell me what was not vegan about it and she said I must not be a real vegan because if I was, I would know and then she just laughed at me. Can someone tell me what is not vegan about the McDonald's Peach Pie?

1. That person is an IDIOT. Really, if they have something concrete, they should educate you. Seriously? Isn't the point of an animal rights meeting to educate people? GRRRR.

2. In their apple pies, there's beef fat in it. I don't know about their peach pie, but I suspect that it's there also. It has something to do with the crust. However, I would hope that since you and the manager looked over the ingredient list that I'm wrong. Sometimes the list of ingredients is SO LARGE that even though two people are looking at it, you can still skip something (which is why many times the allergy information is printed in bold, because the list is so huge). Also, it may have non-vegan ingredients listed as NATURAL FLAVORS

However, they may have changed their recipe, so I may be wrong, but this was the case last I checked.

Honestly, I try to support fast foods joints that have veg meals, show that there is a demand for these products. Besides, you don't want to be the downer who says "I can't eat here, I'm veg" when you're with your non-veg friends.

Short answer: Probably the crust or natural flavors, try re-reading the ingredients again, and check out how they cook it, because if they deep fry it, the oil may have chicken in it (same oil as the nuggets?)

A vegan who works at McDonald's = oxymoron

Most Vegans are into animal rights so McD's isn't their favorite place to eat. I haven't seen the ingredient list for the peach pie, so I don't know if it's vegetarian or not.

Sugar is not vegan silly.

It is made with animal bone char, yummy!

Raw sugar, brown sugar, cane juice, and a few other vegan sugars exist.

If a sugar is white, it was made with bone char.

McDonald's uses this type of sugar in the peach pie.

Hope this helps!

Oh, and McDonalds doesn't disclose their ingredients properly, lets dissect this example:

Double Cheeseburger:

"100% Beef Patty, Regular Bun, Pasteurized Process American Cheese, Ketchup, Mustard, Pickle Slices, Onions."

100% beef is the name of the company that supplies the meat.

Regular bun is not a food ingredient, its a product

American cheese is not an ingredient its a final product,

Ketchup, not an ingredient, a final product

You see what I mean?

I agree that McD's is NOT a place for vegans. Vegans usually don't enjoy supporting the meat industry.

Sorry but I find it very hard to believe that the manager was really a vegan! What self-respecting vegan would work at McDonald's?

If you read the ingredients and it contained no animal products, it's vegan.

Some people, omnivores, vegetarians, and vegans alike, love to claim that if someone eats at fast food locales/shops at Wal-Mart/has electricity, then they are not a "real" vegan or vegetarian.

That's bullsh*t.

Although the person laughing at you was rude, I tend to wonder why you are going to McDonalds. McDonalds are responsible for so much animal abuse. They get all of their meat from factory farms and are responsible for destroying a great deal of the world's rainforest. They tried to stop the movie Earthlings (on youtube, disturbing but important movie) from being produced because it uses footage from some of the farms where they get their meat. It made me cry.
