Are there edible vegetarian sausage casings?

Boca, Turtle Island, Lightlife, Yves, El Burrito and others all make great vegetarian sausages and hot dogs. Most of these seem to be cased with something, and are edible.

I've done countless searches on the internet and have only come up with this: edible cellulose casings, starch based casings, and an alginous coating, ala vegicase.

But what I can't find is where can I get some of these casings? I make veggie sausage at home and use plastic casings. You can't eat those, and you certainly can't grill them.

For small batches I normally use bakers parchment paper. For large batches I use the company listed below

Yes, buy the dried kind you see that hang in the market. They are really the intestine of farm animal. You should choose the right size according to diameter not length, generally sheep is medium and fits most, they are selling a lot of pigmy goat in the far asia I hear. Next, choose your soaking agent, olive oil or better smelling baby oil is working well (not from the real baby). Soak casing in a bowl of oil until subtle, tie a knot in the end and cut to the right length, repeat until there is no length left. Store in baggy in fridge next to mayo. Don't keep too long or there will be spoilage. Enjoy. Also check for holes before using.

They might be a little loose, so if you staple them on, they will protect you from unwanted babby action. Mmmmm...sausage. Do you have some sausage I can borrow??

Can you believe it? There is actually an association for Sausage Casing makers!!

The first address is for the association, the second is for a supplier that sells to the public.
